The Association for Historical Fencing
is proud to present

The Historical Fencing Translation Project

created as an ongoing endeavor to produce top quality, professionally translated historical fencing treatises.

The Historical Fencing Translation Project (HFTP) is the offspring of the Capo Ferro Translation Project (CFTP) which was created in 2000 to raise funding for the translation of Ridolfo Capo Ferro’s great fencing treatise Gran Simlacro.... Four years after its initiation, the CFTP completed its mission with the publication of Italian Rapier Combat which is now available through any major bookseller.

This translation was made possible through the donations and efforts of generous patrons and several not-for-profit organizations. In continuing this important work, the HFTP is in the preliminary stages of undertaking another translation of an important historical fencing treatise. We are now accepting donations to fund the translation of another significant treatise. The works currently under consideration for translation are:

Italian

  • LA SCHERMA - Francesco Alfieri - 1640
  • RAGIONE DI ADOPRAR SICURAMENTE L’ARME SI DA OFFESA, COME DA DIFESA - Giacomo di Grassi - 1570
  • TRATTATO IN MATERIA DI SCHERMA - Marco Docciolini - 1601
  • LA SCHERMA ILLUSTRATA - Giuseppe Morsicato Pallavicini – 1670

French

  • LES VRAYS PRINCIPLES DE L'ESPÉE SEULE - Philibert De La Touche - 1670
  • L'EXERCICE DES ARMES - Jean Baptiste Le Perche – 1676
  • L'ART DES ARMES, OU LA MANIERE LA PLUS CERTAINE DE SE SERVIR UTILEMENT DE L'EPÉE... - Guillaume Danet - 1766-1767
  • NOUVEAU TRAITE DE L’ART DES ARMES – Nicolas Demeuse - 1786

Spanish

  • COMPENDIO DE LOS FUNDAMENTOS DE LA VERDADERA DESTREZA Y FILOSOFIA DE LAS ARMAS - Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard - 1675
  • NOBLEZA DE LA ESPADA - Don Francisco Lorenz de Rada - 1705

It is the long term goal of the HFTP to become a self-funded project, using the proceeds from the sales of subsequent translations to fund future translations. For example, all proceeds from the sale of Italian Rapier Combat are being allocated to the HFTP to support the next translation project.

However, this will only account for a small portion of our goal. We are now accepting donations from Historical Fencing enthusiasts. It was through the efforts of fencing historians, scholars, museum curators, and the general public that Italian Rapier Combat became a reality. We need your help now more than ever.

There are various donation levels available to all donors. All sponsors will receive special acknowledgement for their generous donation in the print edition of the newest translation. Sponsorships are available as follows:

Patron$250
Sponsor$500
Advocate$750
Benefactor$1000

Donations in any amount are also welcome and appreciated.

How to Donate

You may make your donation online by credit card or mail a check or money order.

As a Non-for Profit organization, The Association for Historical Fencing can be eligible for Matching Funds donations or Corporate Grants. We are asking individual sponsors who work in corporate environments to explore the possibility of obtaining corporate funding through their employers.

The next translation will be commissioned once we achieve our initial goal. All profits from the sale of Italian Rapier Combat along with your generous donations will aid us in achieving this goal. Continue to check the website for information on the progress of the Historical Fencing Translation Project.
