Writer's Guidelines 1. Estafilade welcomes unsolicited articles from AHF members. Such articles shall deal solely with the art, science, and technique of classical or historical fencing, or some subject relative to the history of Western swordsmanship. 2.Articles shall be written in a scholarly and academic manner. All sources shall be documented in footnotes, and a bibliography of works cited shall be provided with each article. Unsupported, nebulous claims, flights of fantasy, or theorizing about intangibles are causes for the rejection of any article. All articles shall be reviewed by the editorial staff for accuracy. 3. Articles may be of any length, from 500 words on up (larger articles may be serialized). Submitted articles should be double-spaced, with the article's title, author's name, and word count clearly marked on each page. Please note that, regardless of what your high-school typing teacher taught you, a tab character shall mark the beginning of every new paragraph-not five space keys-and that each period shall be followed by only one, not two, spaces. If you are unsure how to view formatting marks on-screen, select "tools," then "options," then under "formatting marks," select "all." (This is very important, as the editor greatly dislikes adding or removing formatting marks before flowing the text into Quark.) 4. Articles shall be written in clear, coherent English, using standard Chicago Manual of Style rules. Note that Estafilade uses standard American spellings, such as "saber" instead of "sabre." However, accents on foreign loan words, such as "?e," shall be included. 5. Beginning November 15, 2002, Estafilade shall be a bimonthly publication. Publication date shall be the 15th of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Submission deadlines 30 days prior to publication of each issue. 5. Articles should be sent to the editor either as an e-mail attachment or via snail mail as a 3.5" floppy disk or burned onto a CD. Microsoft Word for Windows is the preferred format. Black-and-white or grayscale illustrations may be sent as JPEG e-mail attachments, burned onto a CD as JPEGs or TIFFs, or as hard copy to be scanned. If electronic art is provided, the minimum resolution is 300 dpi. Please do not add text using Photoshop or similar programs; rather, provide a mock-up and detailed instructions, so that we can preserve the newsletter's internal consistency as regards fonts, sizes, etc. 6. No monetary compensation is offered for submitted articles. Copyright is retained by the original author in all cases. No article printed by the AHF can be reprinted without the express permission of the author. |
